The plate itself was originally conceived by Colin M. Caplan of Taste of New Haven and launched on Pi Day — March 14, 2025 — in what quickly became an instant success. Hundreds of applications reportedly poured in during the first few days alone, helping create America’s first pizza-themed license plate.

The timing also makes sense. Over the last few years, Connecticut has leaned heavily into its growing reputation as one of the best pizza destinations in the country—a sentiment we certainly share. But what makes the Pizza State plate especially meaningful is the charitable component behind it. According to state reporting, most of the proceeds from the specialty plate are directed toward helping Connecticut Foodshare continue its work supporting residents facing food insecurity.
At a time when many Connecticut families are still struggling with rising grocery costs and economic uncertainty, it’s a simple way for residents to support a good cause while showing some state pride at the same time.
The plates are available to Connecticut residents with a current DMV automobile registration and can be ordered as a standard specialty plate or personalized vanity plate.
