Connecticut’s Pizza License Plate Is More Than a Badge of State Pride — It Helps Feed Families

  • Connecticut’s new “Pizza State” license plate celebrates the state’s legendary pizza culture while supporting a great cause.
  • Most proceeds from every plate go directly to Connecticut Foodshare to help fight food insecurity across the state.
  • Connecticut drivers can order the specialty plate now and show off their pizza pride while helping local families in need.

There are few things Connecticut residents love more than debating and eating pizza.

Whether you’re loyal to New Haven-style apizza, a neighborhood slice shop, or your favorite hometown pizzeria, one thing most people across the state can agree on is this: Connecticut takes its pizza seriously.

Now, that passion has officially made its way onto our license plates.

Connecticut’s new “Pizza State” specialty license plate — complete with a pepperoni pizza slice and the slogan “The Pizza State” — has quickly become one of the most talked-about specialty plates in the state and elsewhere. But beyond the fun design and hometown pride, the plate is also helping support an important mission: fighting hunger in Connecticut.

The initiative benefits Connecticut Foodshare, the statewide nonprofit that helps provide millions of meals each year through a network of food banks, meal programs, and mobile pantries serving communities across Connecticut.

The plate itself was originally conceived by Colin M. Caplan of Taste of New Haven and launched on Pi Day — March 14, 2025 — in what quickly became an instant success. Hundreds of applications reportedly poured in during the first few days alone, helping create America’s first pizza-themed license plate.

And honestly, could there be a more Connecticut idea?

The timing also makes sense. Over the last few years, Connecticut has leaned heavily into its growing reputation as one of the best pizza destinations in the country—a sentiment we certainly share. We recently congratulated Norwalk’s own Crust Issues for being named the #1 pizza slice in the state by 5 Reasons to Visit, and it’s local gems like these that prove why Connecticut deserves the crown. The state even installed highway welcome signs proudly proclaiming Connecticut as the “Pizza Capital of the United States.”

Now residents can literally take that claim on the road.

This sign is in placed in two locations: I-95 and I-84, both entering Connecticut from New York.

What the Connecticut Pizza License Plate Represents

But what makes the Pizza State plate especially meaningful is the charitable component behind it. According to state reporting, most of the proceeds from the specialty plate are directed toward helping Connecticut Foodshare continue its work supporting residents facing food insecurity.

At a time when many Connecticut families are still struggling with rising grocery costs and economic uncertainty, it’s a simple way for residents to support a good cause while showing some state pride at the same time.

The plates are available to Connecticut residents with a current DMV automobile registration and can be ordered as a standard specialty plate or personalized vanity plate.

In a state where pizza is practically part of the culture, this might be one of the most Connecticut things ever created: a license plate that celebrates great food while helping neighbors in need.

And really, that’s something everyone can get behind.
